The Fine Arts Marquee is a space where art comes alive. Founded on the belief that every artist deserves a stage, we offer a dedicated venue for all visual creators—both professional and aspiring—to share their work with the community.

Based in the Hillcrest, we are the meeting point for the incredible talent from both the North and South KZN coastlines to the Midlands and beyond.

We don't just try to marry buyers with art; we celebrate the stories behind the artists and their work. Through our interactive artist demonstrations, visitors can discover new techniques and mediums firsthand, creating a unique dialogue between the maker and the community.

The Artists

Tracy White

Wildlife & Pet Portrait Artist

Based in the Hillcrest area, Tracy White’s artistic journey is one of evolution and discovery. While she began her path in 2019 exploring the fluidity of watercolours, her search for precision led her through a focused period with coloured pencils in 2023.

In 2024, Tracy discovered her true calling in soft pastels and pastel pencils. This medium provides the perfect balance of texture and detail required for her signature style: vibrant realism.

Tracy specializes in pet portraits and wildlife, driven by a fascination with animal personality. She is particularly drawn to subjects with evocative expressions—those fleeting, soulful looks that invite the viewer to pause and wonder, "What are they thinking?"

Debbie Linforth

From a young age, the African bush shaped not only Debbie’s childhood, but her soul.

Growing up in the wild beauty of Limpopo, she was fortunate enough to spend most of her early years immersed in a true bush environment.

With a sketchpad and pencils always close at hand, she would quietly choose a spot beneath the vast African sky and draw whatever unfolded before her — wildlife moving through the veld, birds in the trees, and the raw, untamed beauty of nature.

Her deep connection with the bush led her to qualify and work as a field guide at numerous reserves across South Africa.

This experience allowed her to observe animals intimately in their natural habitats and to capture her own photographic reference material — images that would later be meticulously brought to life on paper.

Animals remain Debbie’s greatest passion and the central focus of her work. Whether sketching majestic African wildlife or beloved family pets, she strives to capture not only physical likeness but personality, spirit, and emotion.

Working primarily in graphite and Polychromos coloured pencils, Debbie combines technical precision with heartfelt storytelling in every piece she creates.

Meet The Artist

I was born in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands, in the 60s just after Nelson Mandela was captured near our family’s dairy farm. For some reason, the Dargle Valley is a creator of creative people, and I am lucky enough to be one of the products of this area.

It was during my studies at the Natal Technikon in the 80s that I realised that you could have a career in the art world. There were many options, from journalism to graphic art, fine art, and jewellery design; the choice was endless. I was dying to do something like this, but continued the boring way forward, studying as a Production Manager with a bursary from Coronation brickworks in Pietermaritzburg.

I married my wife Wendy in ‘86, and we have two gorgeous adult children. Wendy taught, and I ran a busy estate agency in Hilton. There was very little time for art, but, boy, did I need to use my creative mind for cash flow, being ahead of the opposition, and keeping all the bills paid.

My art career started on a family holiday to Knysna, where I attended a course with well-respected commercial artist Dale Elliot.

With the odd break and many mentors, I have slowly built my own style. My favourite spot is my studio set in a quiet cul de sac in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal. The rolling hills, cattle in neighbouring pastures, a rumble from a farm tractor and the fresh smell of cow dung are certainly what I call home.

Jason Johnstone

I am a photographic artist based in Howick, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. My goal when creating an image is to inspire a sense of wonder. To capture the feeling or mood behind a subject or an experience. To make an image that is about something, rather than of something.

A fellow photographer, whose work I very much admire, describes this type of image as ‘poetic photography’. I love this description and it is always in the forefront of my mind when capturing and editing an image.

To this end I love experimenting with creative processing techniques and combining images to create an atmospheric and expressive piece of art. I am fascinated by old photographic processes, such as cyanotypes and by combining photography with other mediums, such as encaustic.

My work can be found at www.johnstone.photography.

He worked extensively in Glasgow, Scotland where he did his apprenticeship, he has also worked in San Antonio, Texas and Hawaii, and has owned tattoo studios in Durban, Jo’burg, Cape Town, Knysna and Inverness, Scotland.

Kevin started painting in 2007, during one of his visits back from Inverness, to his restaurant in Greyton, He has never had any formal art training, other than his tattoo apprenticeship.

Most of his paintings are oil on canvas, and as subject matter, he prefers the bold, colourful, old school tattoo designs, but doesn’t mind dabbling in a bit of abstract or cubism."

Megan Brunkhorst

Megan Brunkhorst is a part-time artist based in Pietermaritzburg. Megan’s love of art started during her high school years, where art was one of her main subjects. After leaving school, Megan pursued her other passion, Science, and worked in various research roles, finally spending the last 21 years as a Senior Technician at UKZN in the Genetics/Molecular Biology field.

By chance, Megan attended a workshop by graphite artist, Vincent Reid, and her passion for art was reignited. Experimenting with various mediums, Megan realised that she is passionate about anything pencil related. After attending a workshop by renowned landscape artist, David Johnson, pastel became a firm favourite too.

Drawn to the challenge of capturing intricate textures, Megan embraces the discipline of realism, finding joy in translating fine detail onto paper. Working primarily in pencil, she brings to life the subtle details found in nature, waterscapes, and portraiture.

Through her art, Megan invites viewers to appreciate the quiet beauty and complexity of the natural world.

Kirsten Humboldt

Kirsten Humboldt was born in Cape Town, South Africa, but relocated with family to
Pietermaritzburg, KZN in 1993, where she developed a keen interest in art, studying it during high school and progressing to majoring in painting and print-making at UKZN in 2007.
Kirsten has continued producing art over the years, utilizing various mediums particularly
pencil and oils, but developed a keen interest in watercolour as her primary medium over the past eight years. She has been captivated by what this beautiful, fluid medium has to offer — its unpredictability, transparency and the unique character it brings to every piece.
Being a fond lover of the natural beauty of South African wildlife, these subjects play an
integral influence in her artwork. Across all mediums, she is drawn to capturing the unique details of animals and birds.

“My art is a celebration of the natural world with its diverse beauty which we are immersed in, especially here in South Africa. The wildlife found here truly reflects the diversity of the South African people, bringing together a range of cultures, traditions and a passion for who we are and the country we love. The wonders of our natural landscape is truly remarkable, nand I think we are so lucky to call this environment our home.”
